Body Crysis

Body Crysis

Interdisciplinary Performance

Overview

Body Crysis is a ritualistic journey of metamorphosis, reflecting humanity’s collective transformation in response to the pandemic and environmental upheavals.

This hybrid, hyperreal performance merges dance motion capture, live music, and online gaming into a cross-border experience spanning Taipei, Melbourne, and a virtual space.

Co-produced by Taipei-based new media art collective NAXS STUDIO, Melbourne choreographer Harrison Hall, and media artist Sam McGilp, it features Taiwan’s experimental rock/folk band PrairieWWWW in a ritualistic performance.

  • World Building

We drew inspiration from Taiwan's indigenous stories of stone births, mythology of giant, and the natural world's cycles of insect, we construct an imaginary world and Inviting audiences from around the globe to participate together.

The work is anchored in an online gaming narrative, with live dance and music serving as guides, leading audiences to experience this fictional ritual together.

During the performance, audiences from around the world connect together as an imagined community through art and technology.

In this increasingly complex and chaotic world, we aim to convey a bright and positive message through this piece of work.

  • Key Elements

This project blends multiple elements. While people at two physical venues enjoy live performances, online users dive into a virtual game, controlling avatars to explore a digital world together.

These three spaces—two on-site locations and one virtual realm—are not only happening simultaneously but are also interconnected.

The music and movement from the live performances influence the virtual space, while interactions within the digital world resonate back to the physical venues, creating a dynamic, real-time exchange that connects audiences across different locations.
