Triplet State

Triplet State

A performance integrating motion capture, dance, and real-time generated sound and visuals

Overview

The team drew inspiration from discussions of "twinship" in structural anthropology during the creation process, using this concept as a foundation to understand and represent "distributed identity." Combining dance, motion capture, real-time audio-visuals, and game interaction, the work creates a multi-layered sensory experience that reflects on the intersection of digital and real identities and explores future possibilities of the body and digital technology.

During the creation process, the team was inspired by discussions of "twinship" in structural anthropology, using it as a foundation to understand and represent "distributed identity." This concept examines how humans construct, deconstruct, and reconstruct the self across multiple digital identities and physical entities. This distributed body construction approach uses motion capture technology to input the movements of three performers, mapping them onto a single virtual avatar, achieving a transformation and reconfiguration of the body within the digital realm.

Triplet State also continues NAXS STUDIO's exploration of mythological narrative translation and ritual-driven creative methods. Through cross-disciplinary collaboration and experimentation, the team deepens its contemporary interpretation of myths, symbols, and rituals, transforming them into a contemporary digital art language. The performance integrates motion capture, dance, real-time generated sound and visuals, and game interaction, creating a multi-layered sensory experience that explores the future possibilities of the intertwining of body and digital technology.

Through the presentation of Triplet State, the work not only re-examines the relationship between digital identity and the body but also provides the audience with a new type of interactive experience, merging the physical and digital worlds within the same space, and promoting reflection on the complex interaction between contemporary technology and human cognition.

The music for this work is designed by NAXS STUDIO's director, Han-Yu Feng. The music concept focuses on two main elements: "materiality" and "rituality." In terms of materiality, a significant amount of real-world sound samples are used to enhance the "ecological" connection between the live performance space and the virtual world, minimizing traditional musical techniques. This approach allows the audience to experience the performance as if they were observers in a documentary, witnessing the ritualistic actions of the performers while following the intertwined connections revealed through sound.

The performance also incorporates real-time microphone recording effects. Performers wear clip-on microphones, and as they move, pull ropes, or shift objects, the captured sounds are amplified and processed through Ableton Live software, allowing the audience to perceive the subtle details of the movements.

In the latter part of the performance, repetitive rhythmic sounds and digital vocals are introduced, aiming to infuse a deep, ritualistic element into the complex digital environment.
